Draped and twisted nude silk jersey for the multi-hyphenate, Marg Gutierrez

Lawyer / President of Professional Models of the Philippines (PMAP) / Government Official as Undersecretary of Department of the Interior and Local Government

Inspired by my current pop obsession two time Eurovision winner, Loreen. Specifically, the music video for her single, Tattoo which visually draws heavily from her Moroccan Berber roots. The video itself looks like it can be a scene from Denis Villenueve’s Dune.

The stars in the cup of our hands.

Another sketch to reality post!

I first met Ean when her group in Ateneo Senior High interviewed me for a school project.

Almost a year later, she approached me to make her grad ball dress. She had a very specific dress in mind. Thankfully, the budget is good so we were able to really flex our creative and technical muscle to make it happen.

The dress took almost two months to make, which for a grad ball/ prom dress is uncharacteristically long. It's more of a debutante timeline but the budget is more of a debutante budget so why not.

The ultimate focus of the dress is symmetry. I wanted a dress that explored the different kinds of symmetry.

We started by doing embroidery studies on which thread and colors to use for the stars. Each star is made of linear rays arranged in radial symmetry.

The skirt is made of seven symmetrical panels with each star placed symmetrically along the vertical axis. It took our embroiderer almost two weeks to make the skirt just to make sure no star is out of place.

The embroidered stars were then overlayed with handsewn gold bullion threads I ordered from abroad specifically for this project to create dimension and more shimmer. The stars are then finished with gold japanese cut beads.

The top while not as tedious required ultra precise work since the embroidered stars were drawn onto each pattern piece that when done should lay flat against the bodice without any allowance. This is most crucial especially for the center front panel at the gap between the cups. If the embroidery is even 1/4 inch too big or too small it's gonna look messed up.

For the color of the dress, we achieved it by layering around three shades of pink and nude tulle and then, as a final touch, during the assembly of the dress we underlayed jewel studded tulle right beneath the embroidered surface to create more depth and texture and the necessary shimmer.

The resulting dress is equal parts dreamy yet ultra modern. Which is absolutely what we were going for.

Spring

Loving these gorgeous photos from our client Sydney who commissioned for a custom organza ruffle bustier dress in different shades of dusty rose and hints of rust that reminds me so much of spring time.

Spring has always been associated with new beginnings and rebirth.
The start of a new cycle. Oftern marked with much optimism and joy.
Here’s to hoping the days ahead marks the beginning of good things for everyone.

Proof of Life!

Proof of Life!
What a crazy couple of years it has been.
The worldwide pause fundamentally changed our dynamics and how we as a studio wish to move forward.

We had time to recalibrate what the brand truly meant and how we wish to navigate in a world full of uncertainty and anxiety; and to always be reminded that there are forces as powerful as love that as Dante Alighieri eternalized in Divina Commedia, “ the love that moves the sun and other stars (l'amor che move Sole El altre stelle)”.

Blush

Theres this feeling of both excitement, deep satisfaction and unexplainable happiness upon  seeing my vision slowly transform into real actual tangible dresses.

I love the process of creating. So to be given an opportunity to exercise no holds barred creatvity Is something I'm really thankful for.

This set is very special since most of the bridesmaids are my friends. This set is also my gift for an old friend of mine whom I've known ever since high school.

The only key direction was everything had to be in shades of blush. The rest is up to me.

I envisioned something mismatched. Vintage yet modern. Unique but very cohesive.

I also wanted to showcase range. What our atelier can do.

I'm very proud of the finished product. It's even better than I imagined.

Poetry

I'm excited to share this intimate Union of two souls stitched together by their shared love for beautiful words. I'm left breathless by the sheer beauty of it all. More than the beauty, the couple's immense shared joy could be felt just by looking at their pictures. It felt as if I was there myself.

We also made the hand fasting cord in this photo. We braided scraps of her bridesmaids and moms dresses to make this. It adds another layer of intimacy when pieces of those closest to them are literally binding their union.

Debut

Different cultures have different ways of celebrating the transition of a girl to womanhood. In the Philippines it happens when a girl turns 18. Traditionally celebrated in the presence of not just the debutante's family but also in the presenxe of her extended to community.

This one that I'm making is special since I've done Aly's prom dress too.

It's such a nice feeling to be the person she goes to to celebrate milestones of her life.

Serendipity

I'm recently doing a collection drive asking my former brides to send in photos and snippets of their wedding so I can share their story on my website. Angela was one of the first to respond. There's always a sense of excited delight when you get to see shots of the fruits of our collaborative effort for the first time. Months of work immortalized in stills.

Angela found me through a common friend that I met through the beautiful interweb. It's cool to have these unexpected almost random interconnectedness between different people that makes human interaction truly special.  It makes me believe that maybe fate does exist somehow.

One year after we first met, I got an email from her asking me to make her dress. She wanted modern and sexy perfect for a sea side wedding in La Union, Philippines. I was more than happy to oblige.

This wedding video so beautifully shot by Tony Perez of Reel Story is a wonderful glimpse of how life can glue souls and bring them together as one. And how beautiful an accident that can be.
